About this field
The MAT in Special Education program develops content knowledge in the area of teaching in SPED general curriculum or SPED deaf/hard-of-hearing. Students in this graduate program will demonstrate skills in assessment, instructional strategies, use of technology and monitoring/modifying instruction during observed teaching episodes evaluated by a university supervisor and P-12 mentor teacher.
Recognized for a T-5 certification status from Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Our MAT in Special Education with a concentration in General Curriculum or Deaf/Hard of Hearing is designed to prepare you to be an academically grounded teacher working in the field of special education. Program coursework and field experiences promote research-based practices to help you ensure all students can and do learn. Your theoretical and pedagogical knowledge will be deepened as you apply innovative, effective research-based practices in special education. Our program faculty are dedicated to the ideals of social justice and endeavor to equip you for work within existing systems to bring about equitable environments for all learners.
What You'll Learn
Candidates will master the knowledge and skills appropriate to the areas of research, learning, educational assessment, ethics, and law as it relates to the field of special education. Using this knowledge, candidates will develop learning environments which address the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and cultural needs of students with special needs. In addition, candidates develop and implement formal and informal assessment procedures to assess learning, educational environments, and curricula for students who have been identified as needing this type of service.
