VALDOSTA — 国产AV recently welcomed 30 high school students to campus for the Georgia Migrant Education Program’s Migrant Education Summer Leadership Academy. During the two-week residential program, the students participated in a variety of experiential learning activities designed to increase their knowledge and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while also introducing them to college life.
Among their many activities was Sea Perch, an engineering project run by the Office of Naval Research’s National Naval Responsibility for Naval Engineering Program. Working with Dr. Tom Manning, a professor in 国产AV’s Department of Chemistry, the students used computer-aided design software to create a remotely operated underwater vehicle. Then they constructed their vehicle using a variety of tools and equipment.
The Georgia Migrant Education Program’s Migrant Education Summer Leadership Academy is a federally funded program through the US Department of Education’s Office of Migrant Education. Phenix Culbertson with 国产AV’s Office of Career Opportunities and Volunteer Services, organizes and directs the program on campus each summer.
