Advisory Committee Charter
DEPARTMENT OF ADULT AND CAREER EDUCATION
ADVISORY COMMITTEE CHARTER
The Department of Adult and Career Education on this 9th day of March, 1988, authorizes the establishment of a continuing committee to be known as the Advisory Committee for the Department of Adult and Career Education. This committee is to be organized and conducted under procedures to be proposed by the Department of Adult and Career Education, particularly in keeping with the mission of the department.
The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to give advice and assistance to the appropriate instructional and administrative staff of the department concerning the development, operation, and/or evaluation of a particular instructional program. The committee shall also render services to all involved. Appointment of new committee members will be for an established period of three years and be made by the faculty of the department.
The Advisory Committee for the Department of Adult and Career Education is expected to contribute to the establishment and/or improvement of the instructional program by:
Studying and surveying periodically the educational needs of the students within the committee's designated vocational areas;
Offering advice in the review, analysis, development, and proposal of policies;
Working cooperatively with the administrative, instructional, and non-instructional staff of the vocational programs to develop and operate training programs with procedures that implement policies and recommendations;
Facilitating communication between the professional staff of the department and the teachers and employers of the community;
Studying the effects of existing and new educational programs in operation with reference to employability of the graduate or ability of the graduate to proceed to higher-level instruction;
Serving as a sounding board of opinion on items proposed by the departmental faculty and staff; and
Initiating study and proposals in issues pertinent to vocational program development.
In authorizing the development of the Advisory Committee, the Department of Adult and Career Education pledges complete cooperation in the committee work. This shall include the appointment of a departmental representative with the responsibility to work with the Advisory Committee and keep all communications open between the department and the committee.
Advisory Committee Co-chairs
The co-chairs of the Advisory Committee will be two faculty members within the Department of Adult and Career Education. The co-chairs will be appointed by the department head. The co-chairs will be responsible for: coordinating the selection process for adding new committee members each year; scheduling meetings of the committee; facilitating the meetings; recording the minutes of the meetings; and disseminating copies of the minutes to all interested persons.
Composition of the Advisory Committee
The Advisory Committee will be composed of appointed faculty members within the Adult and Career Education Department, selected representatives from various service areas, and Adult and Career Education Department student representatives. Ex officio members will be the Adult and Career Education Department Chair and off-campus coordinators.
Members will serve a three-year term. At the end of the term, they may either rotate off or have the opportunity to be reappointed for another three-year term. New members will be selected each year for a three-year term. Student members will serve a one-year term, subject to renewal. This selection process will be the responsibility of the committee co-chairs and will take place during the early part of the fall term. If a member resigns from the committee, the Adult and Career Education Department Advisory Faculty Committee will appoint a new member to fulfill the unexpired term.
Meetings
The Advisory Committee will meet once during the spring semester of each academic year. Electronic meetings/correspondence will be held when necessary to address issues that arise. If a member is unable to attend the Advisory Committee meeting, the member will provide a substitute to represent said member at the meeting. Notice of the meeting will be sent to each committee member by the committee co-chairs well in advance of the meeting.
