Advising and Registration
Advising and Registration
All majors in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages are assigned a professional advisor as soon as they are accepted to 国产AV and/or declare a major in the department. This means that you will have access to an advisor for your full school career. Your advisor will work with you individually on creating a path to graduation and choosing judiciously your courses each semester to follow this path and graduate in a timely manner.
Your advisor monitors your progress and keeps track of all your information. You will see your advisor each semester during advising periods, and you may also make an appointment with your advisor throughout the semester if needed. You will not be able to register for classes without the approval of your advisor. After advising you, they will lift your advising flag in Banner to indicate that you are eligible for registration.
Student Information/Majors/Minors/Double Majors
Majors
All majors in MCL are required to get advised before registering for classes. Advising is necessary to ensure your progress is on track. If you need assistance to locate your advisor, or to find out who your advisor is, please contact the department at 229-333-5948.
Minors
Students who are minoring in a foreign language should consult the minor requirements, talk to their Foreign Language instructor, and contact the department at 229-333-5948 to declare the minor and get more advising information.
Double Majors
Majors in MCL who are also majoring in another area, are required to get advising in both departments. It is necessary that both of your advisors in the two departments are able to work together to ensure you are on track with both of your chosen areas of study. Working towards two degrees at the same time can be challenging, but closely monitoring your progress in both degrees makes it manageable and helps you graduate on time. The benefits of a double major for your future career are well worth the effort.

Advisors for MCL or Programs with Foreign Language Requirements
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages has their own dedicated advisors to assist our majors and minors. Advisors to other departments and programs may have to assist students who need a course(s) in a foreign language for their major's requirements.
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages has their own dedicated advisors to assist our majors and minors. Advisors to other departments and programs may have to assist students who need a course(s) in a foreign language for their major's requirements.
The WebCape Placement Exam is used to determine the proficiency level of students who have some foreign language knowledge. The exam is free, takes about 20-40 minutes to complete, and will give us the suggested course to start in. If your student needs to take the exam please have you or the student to fill out the WebCape Placement Exam Request Form. Once the form is received, our office administrator (Sam Powell) will assign an exam to the student, who has 7 days to take the exam. The results can then be emailed to the advisors by either Sam Powell or the student who took the exam.
Questions about the exam can be sent to Sam Powell at sjpowell@valdosta.edu.
